A hands-on activity in linking and enriching geo-data, part of the Linked Pasts conference

Geo-data are increasingly important to the practice of connecting digital documents and resources. Information about where something was built or found, an event happened, or an individual lived is both a meaningful interpretative lens and a powerful digital aggregator. Location-based visualisations and especially those involving maps, help to identify trends and clusters in the digital resources, offer intuitive interfaces and foster engagement. It is not surprising that many cultural institutions are now looking at geo-data as a means to create bridges between different collections. However, this vision is often impeded by a number of technical issues, including metadata inconsistencies and place-names variations.The <a href="https://github.com/tanc-ahrc/LocatingTANC" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Locating a National Collectio</a>n project, in collaboration with <a href="https://www.sciencemuseumgroup.org.uk/project/heritage-connector/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Heritage Connector</a>, <a href="http://whgazetteer.org" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">World Historical Gazetteer</a>, and <a href="https://www.turing.ac.uk/research/research-projects/living-machines" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Living with Machines</a>, wants to offer a practical and hands-on approach to these issues, and, ideally, to experiment with viable solutions.The activity will present participants with three tools, each of which forms a critical step in a workflow for aligning and enriching cultural heritage collections metadata using geo-data. This ‘Test and Play’ event will consist of a 1-hour demo and a Q&amp;A session for each tool. Participants will then be allowed time to test and play with the tool using cultural heritage datasets that we will make available (courtesy of, for example, British Library, Historic Environment Scotland, and Historic England) or use their own data. The asynchronous ‘Test and Play’ session for each tool will conclude with a second, 1-hour event where participants are invited to ask questions, discuss and provide feedback on what they have learned. Some of the tools require simple programming skills, but other options will be accessible to participants with all backgrounds.The activity will conclude with a round table gathering the developers of the tools and some external guests, to discuss strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches, lacunae and future efforts.The event is part of the <a href="https://ics.sas.ac.uk/events/linked-pasts-6" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Linked Pasts 6</a> conference organised by <a href="https://www.sas.ac.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">School of Advanced Study</a>, <a href="https://london.ac.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">University of London</a> and the <a href="https://www.bl.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">British Library</a>. We will briefly tour the platform’s features and services, then show how users can upload place datasets, augment them via reconciliation to Getty TGN and Wikidata, and publish them as Linked Open Data.December 10, 15:00-16:00: Karl Grossner (University of Pittsburg) introducing the World Historical Gazetteer.
