About this event

  • Event lasts 2 hours

Join us to be part of this listening experience as together we feel the utopian sounds of trumpets, oboes, and other wind instruments and technologies.

Wind instruments, particularly trumpets, play an important role in the world-making strategies and iconographic landscape of Rebeca Romero’s solo exhibition After the Sun at Copperfield, London. As you enter the show, you are greeted by a delicate yet resolute standing shell bearing an inscription—a speculative score, perhaps signalling the start of a heroic season of sowing. This sound might have once been played by the three trumpets depicted atop a mountainous platform, asserting their presence in the room.

Later, we encounter the central figure of the Sower, a high priestess in this matriarchal, fictional utopian society, who plays her trusty Kawra. The sound of trumpets becomes fundamental to the collective exercise of imagining a world anew—a different future-past in an alternate temporality— where we can hear the voices and instruments of a new revolutionary tomorrow.

The artist and Gisselle Giron Casas, who wrote the accompanying exhibition text, have created a playlist that honours songs prominently featuring wind instruments such as trumpets, oboes, clarinets, and flutes. This listening experience will be enriched by a live trumpet performance courtesy of guest musicians, who will generously share their craft.

Join us for drinks, music, and a collective reimagining of tomorrow—one inspired by the mythical civilization in After the Sun.
