Saturday 7th May
Baltic Triangle: 11:00 - 12:30
Tour Leader: Gerry Proctor, Engage Liverpool
Start point: Baltic Fleet Pub, L1 8DQ
The Baltic Triangle is a fascinating and largely unknown part of the city centre. Prior to the recent regeneration process the area was an industrial and commercial zone that had seen better days and was mostly populated by abandoned, derelict and disused buildings. The Jane’s Walk through the Baltic will take in some of the historic buildings with a special emphasis on the people who work in the area and those who are delivering regeneration. It will look at some of the modern additions and visit some of the venues and businesses that are making the Baltic one of the most vibrant and creative sectors in Liverpool today.
Granby and Welsh Streets: 14:30 - 16:00
Tour Leaders: Marianne Heaslip and Gemma Jerome, Terrace21
Start point: Princes Park gates (at the roundabout of Princes Road and Princes Avenue), L8 3TA
The tour will take us momentarily back in time as we stand at the gates of the historic Princes Park, and look down the grand boulevard of Princes Avenue. We’ll drop back to explore the streets of terraced housing Liverpool has now become famous for, the epicentre of the recent Turner prize winning project. We’ll visit the Granby Workshop, and view the now occupied two-up two-down houses. As a whole the tour attempts to invite people to view and discuss Liverpool’s creative response to the legacy of empty terraced houses resulting from the incomplete housing market renewal initiative; and to consider how local people have been at the centre of plans now unfolding, and how in this regard Jane Jacobs would have passionately advocated the place-based, community-centred approach to urban planning we are beginning to see the results of in Liverpool 8.
Sunday 8th May
Liverpool Waterfront: 11:00 - 12:30
Tour Leader: Professor Ian Wray, University of Liverpool
Start point: The Old Dock 'porthole' next to John Lewis in Liverpool One.
Ian’s talk will start at the Old Dock ‘porthole’ next to John Lewis in Liverpool One, then walking south to north between the new Exhibition Centre and Princes Dock. He will reflect on history, heritage and regeneration, asking to what extent the principles set out in Jane Jacob’s writings have been applied in regenerating Liverpool’s Waterfront.
Liverpool ONE: 14:30 - 16:00
Tour Leader: Graham Marshall, Pro Social Liverpool
Start Point: The Old Dock 'porthole' next to John Lewis in Liverpool One.
The walk will begin above the first enclose wet dock in the world and then follow the course of the original waterway that shaped the city centre, taking in the historic street pattern and significant events that dramatically changed Liverpool’s townscape. The walk will take in the Liverpool One development, and its links into surrounding areas including the waterfront and the Ropewalks area.
The walk will conclude with a rare underground visit to the preserved dock under Liverpool One.
