The age of bazaars, 1820-1939 - talk by Douglass Lockhart

Bazaars were a very popular method of raising funds for a variety of good causes including church buildings, hospitals, village halls and sports clubs. The events were held over several days and involved the sale of goods, entertainment and raffling. The venues were often decorated, sometimes by local cabinetmakers and upholsterers, and often by professional decorating companies who were based in large cities such as Leeds, Liverpool and Newcastle. The literature on bazaars is extensive: newspaper advertisements and reporting of the events; guidebooks often known as the book of the bazaar; souvenir postcards and advertising posters survive in large numbers. The talk will focus on the origins, chronology of bazaars and their decoration.
