About this event

Looking Ahead to the Scottish budget 2022/23

Speakers:

  • Mairi Spowage, Director of the Fraser of Allander Institute
  • David Eiser, Senior Fellow at the Fraser of Allander Institute
  • Paul Johnson, Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies
  • Stephen Boyle, Auditor General for Scotland

The Scottish budget 2022/23 will be presented to parliament by Kate Forbes on 9th December.

The budget will set out the government’s tax and spending policies to support the economic, health and social recovery from the pandemic, and address broader underlying priorities for public services in Scotland. It will be published alongside an updated ‘medium term financial strategy’ that will frame a more detailed spending review due to be published in 2022.

Join us on 6th December to look ahead to the budget. We’ll examine the government’s options for its tax and spend policy, and set out the implications of those options.

What is the outlook for NHS funding, and will this be sufficient to support the recovery from the pandemic? What are the funding implications of the government’s aspirations to transform the social security system in Scotland and substantially reduce child poverty? What is the outlook for the economy, and how does this influence the government’s choices? What are the government’s options on tax policy, and the implications of these? How do climate change objectives impact the budget?

The event will be chaired by Mairi Spowage, Director of the Fraser of Allander Institute. Following a presentation from the FAI’s David Eiser on some of the key issues and choices, we are delighted to be joined by Paul Johnson, Director of the IFS, and the Auditor General for Scotland, Stephen Boyle, who will share their reflections. There will then be opportunity for questions and discussion.
