AN INTRODUCTION TO LOW-CARBON FOUNDATIONS WITH ACAN NATURAL MATERIALS AND OUR SPECIAL GUESTS!

Join ACAN to learn from experts about different types of low-carbon foundations and the benefits of using them. We will explore the decision-making process around choosing a foundation solution, as well as structural philosophies, all illustrated with a multitude of case studies! Building structures contain on average around 50% of the upfront embodied carbon, with a significant proportion of that in the foundations. We’ll explore a range of alternatives to typical concrete foundations that are far lower in carbon than standard. Our expert speakers include:🌿 Beth Williams - Build Collective 🌿Beth is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Certified Passivhaus Designer. She is an associate at Build Collective; a bespoke engineering consultancy in Bristol.Beth will give an well-rounded overview of low-carbon foundations and the main alternatives to concrete. 🌿Steve Webb - Webb Yates 🌿Steve Webb is co-founder of Webb Yates Engineers. Steve has pioneered the practice’s approach to innovation and sustainability. Encouraging the use of non-conventional materials, from cast iron to cork and from inflatables to stone, to design low carbon and environmentally conscious structures. Steve will discuss the relationships between risk and embodied carbon, as well as touching on stone and pile foundations. 🌿Ben Bosence - Local Works 🌿Ben has a background in conservation construction and he continues to research and innovate within his specialist field both in the repair of vernacular buildings and in developing new architectural and landscape-led design projects using local materials, waste, crafts, and people.Ben will illustrate his latest case study that uses second-life telegraph poles as foundations. 🌿Toby Maclean - Allt Environmental Structural Engineers 🌿Toby is a structural engineer with a diverse career engineering everything from oil platforms and concert halls to handbags. Having sold his previous firm TALL Engineers, in 2020 Toby established Allt Environmental to atone for past carbon sins and to address the urgent need to decarbonise the built environment especially in relation to embodied carbon.Toby will round off the talks with a multitude of case-studies for unique and low-carbon foundations. The presentations will be followed by a live Q&amp;A session.This event will be hosted by ACAN Natural Materials Coordinators Aurore Baulier of Atelier Baulier, and Stephanie Crombie of Supernatural Studio.
