The expressionist masterpiece by Sophie Treadwell about a woman who resists.
"Marry me — wants to marry me — George H. Jones — George H. Jones and Company — Mrs. George H. Jones..."
Sophie Treadwell’s blistering and poetic Machinal tells the story of Helen Jones, a woman trapped in a world that demands her obedience: at work, at home and in a loveless marriage. Inspired by the true-crime case of Ruth Snyder that shook America in 1928, Machinal transforms the story of one woman’s life into a visceral vision of modern existence.
Directed by Finlay Glen, this production embraces Treadwell’s expressionist style. As one woman becomes caught up in the machinery of life, she begins to resist.
"I’ll not submit any more - I’ll not submit - I’ll not submit..."
Please note Friday 20th November's performances of Machinal will feature closed captioning.
