About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours
  • Ages 16+

This three hour workshop will cover the essentials of machine knitting. The format is flexible and relaxed.

Complete beginners can come to one class as a taster. Post-beginners and improvers can build up your skills at subsequent workshops. Choose as many or as few dates as you want to. Classes are limited to three students per session. So, you can be sure of individual attention.

All students will have access to a Silver Reed LK150 machine, all the appropriate tools and sufficient high qualilty yarn for samples and the project. This is a modern machine which knits with handknit weights of yarn but has no automatic patterning*. The thicker yarn means you work with fewer needles making it an ideal machine for learing the principles of machine knitting.

The content will be driven by the level of students attending. With the small class size you can each work on different aspects of machine knitting.

For complete beginners will look at

  • how the machine works,
  • how to set up the machine,
  • methods of casting on and off,
  • plain knitting
  • tension swatches.

If you this is your second session or you have some experience then we can cover

  • stitch transfer techiques such as increasing and decreasing, cables, lace
  • ribs and hems
  • partial knitting to create necklines and other shapes
  • adding texture to your knits.

There will be time to make your choice of a small, finished project in addition to the teaching samples.

Please contact me if you have any questions about this workshop.

*If you already have a machine that has automatic patterning (punchcard or electronic) let me know when booking and I can cover this for you on a similar machine.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a class for beginners?

Yes, absolutely! This class starts at the very beginning, introducing the basic concepts and techniques of machine knitting.

What should I bring with me?

A notebook, pen and/or pencil. I'll have all the tools and yarn you need. If you have some special yarn you want to try out, by all means bring it along and we can see if it works on the machine but it's not necessary.

ACCESS ISSUES

Coburg House is an old building with lots of stairs and no lift. My studio is on the second floor and has no windows. I realise this isn't ideal and am looking into alternatives for future events. If you have a wool allergy this may also cause a problem. Please contact me to discuss alternatives.

Which bus should I get?

Lothian Buses routes 16, 34, 35, 36 to Commercial Street and a short walk around the Aldi supermarket or routes 7, 10, 14, 21 to Great Junction Street (where it crosses the Water of Leith) and a short walk down Coburg Street.

Is there parking?

There is on-street parking in the area. There are also ever-changing road works! I will update you in the follow up email if you are attending a workshop.

Refunds and cancellations

If I have to cancel the workshop you will receive a full refund. If you have to cancel and I can fill your place then you will also get a full refund. If I can't fill your place then I will refund 75% of the fee.
