A series of FREE talks and workshops running throughout June.

Part of a series: Where Plants and People Meet The South London Botanical Institute in collaboration with Queen Mary University of London About the WorkshopParticipants will grow new relationships with Rubia tinctorum (rose madder) by creating alternative process portrait photographs of rose madder plantlets. They will practice the gum diazo method, combining historical photographic and contemporary screenprinting techniques to produce photographic images made up of the plants’ roots pigments while also learning about British colonial rose madder cultivation and colour analogue photographic history. Places are limited! About the HostMatthew Beach is an artist and researcher. Embedded within materialist discourses, his practice spans photography, printmaking, video, installation, and writing to explore the entanglements between place, the photographic, and care in more-than-human worlds. Two primary strands of inquiry include companion relations with (sub)tropical flora and gelatinous zooplankton.He is currently on sabbatical from his PhD in the School of Geography, Queen Mary University of London as a Sabbatical Officer within the Queen Mary Students’ Union. Alongside sociologist and senior lecturer Giulia Carabelli, he co-curates Cabinet Cultures, an ongoing cross-industry research partnership exploring how humans attach value to and can collectively change attitudes towards houseplants.Previously he has been a visiting researcher and scholar in the Lamar Dodd School of Art, University of Georgia, artist-in-residence at The Sustainable Darkroom, and research and teaching fellow in printmaking at City and Guilds of London Art School. It features discussions and workshops focused on plants, people and participation and runs from the 11-29th June 2024. The programme marks the beginning of a two-year reopening process for the SLBI following a long period of closure. ‘Where Plants and People Meet’ is co-curated by Dr. Giulia Carabelli and made possible with support from Queen Mary’s Centre for Public Engagement, Large Grant.
