Magic Lantern Show

The London Archives is a free public archive focusing on the history of London, from 1067 to the present day. We preserve and share millions of historical manuscripts, maps, photographs, books which tell the story of the city. You can find us in central London in Clerkenwell, close to Farringdon Station.It's free to visit and use the archives and many of our exhibitions and events are free to attend. The London Archives is funded and managed by the City of London Corporation. We reopened as The London Archives in August 2024 and were previously known as London Metropolitan Archives.Find us in leafy Clerkenwell, close to Farringdon and Angel tubes, where we look after a vast and unique collection of manuscripts, maps, photos, books and films that tell the story of London, right back to 1067. If you haven't visited an archive before, we're a bit like a library or museum, but with millions of unique historical documents waiting to be explored; you choose what we want to see and we put the history of London in your hands.  Not everyone has time to research though, so our exhibitions and events program delves into the archives and presents the fascinating history of the capital for you to enjoy. The London Archives

An evening of Victorian magic and entertainment!

Join us for an evening of specially devised entertainment by the renowned magic lantern performers Jeremy and Carolyn Brooker from the Magic Lantern Society. This is in conjunction with our 'Lost Victorian City' exhibition. The show will feature an authentic triunial (or Triple) magic lantern combining three projectors in a single device. This is the most complex and rarest form of magic lantern entertainment creating fast-moving shows featuring the most spectacular effects the lantern can produce. Carolyn and Jeremy Brooker have been performing together for over 20 years to perfect this demanding art (<a href="https://www.jeremybrooker.com" title="https://www.jeremybrooker.com" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">www.jeremybrooker.com</a>). With live musical accompaniment provided by acclaimed silent film pianist Costas Fotopoulos (<a href="http://www.costasfotopoulos.com/" title="http://www.costasfotopoulos.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">http://www.costasfotopoulos.com/</a>). Costas is based in London and works internationally as a composer and arranger for film, the stage and the concert hall, and performs as a concert, silent film and jazz pianist. <h4>MAGIC LANTERN SHOW: 19:30-20:30 (with a chance to view the projector up close afterwards) EXHIBITION: Visit the 'Lost Victorian City' exhibition, which will be available to view before the main event, and view an additional display of documents around the theme of gothic London specially curated for the evening.</h4> As a pre-Halloween event, people are welcome to come along dressed accordingly with a Victorian Gothic vibe! A paying bar will be available too.

Using the collections held at The London Archives the Lost Victorian City exhibition provides a window into a Victorian London that has since gone from view. Featuring photographs and records of buildings such as the Oxford Arms in Warwick Lane in 1875, the Pool of London, horse drawn transport, shopping and entertainment, experience a captivating journey through a city that was rapidly evolving. The exhibition will be available to view before the show to immerse yourself in the world of Victorian London.
