Event description
Part conjuring show, part educational seminar, Magical Encounters uses magic and the social sciences to help re-image everyday life.

About this event

As an academic at the University of Exeter, I have been learning entertainment magic as a way of examining how embodied skills are acquired (see https://brianrappert.net/magic). “Magical Encounters” offers a highly interactive session that makes use of entertainment magic to explore themes about how we live together. In this Zoom-based session, we will use the play of secrecy, disclosure and deception in magic to discuss the role of secrecy, disclosure and deception in science, war, and everyday life.

Offered as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science, my plan is to record this session with the view to possibly editing the recording into smaller highlight segments. These segments would be posted through my research website as novel resources for conveying social science theories and ideas. I will confirm the arrangements closers to the time, but it would be great if some elements of the session could live on after the event.
