Make a Willow Backpack Workshop

Make a Willow Backpack Workshop

Portessie Public HallBuckie, Moray
Saturday, Jul 4 at 10:00 to Sunday, Jul 5 at 17:30
Overview

Weave your own willow backpack in this hands-on workshop—learn core techniques while creating a practical, beautifully crafted bag.

Spend two days learning willow basketry as you weave your own backpack. These bags are practical, hard-wearing, and built to be used. They're ideal for foraging or simply styling everyday and are incredibly comfortable to wear.

Working step by step, you’ll start by making the base, setting in the uprights, and beginning the weave on day one. On day two, you’ll complete the weave and finish your basket with a border, handle, and adjustable straps in either canvas or leather. If your pace allows, you may also add a lid.

What you’ll learn:
How to build a strong base and set uprights
How to weave using techniques such as randing, double rand, waling, Irish weave, and zig zag
How to shape your basket and use openwork and colour as design features
How to finish your basket with a border, handle, and fitted straps

This workshop is suitable for beginners, with plenty of guidance throughout, and also offers more experienced makers the chance to explore different techniques and push their weaving further.

What’s included:
All tools and materials, including willow and your choice of canvas or leather straps
Step-by-step instruction across both days
Tea and coffee (please bring a packed lunch each day)

You’ll leave with a finished willow backpack and a solid understanding of the process.

No experience needed. Suitable for ages 14+ (under 16s must be accompanied by a participating adult). Willow weaving does require some hand strength and dexterity.
