Makers Talk: Alice Kettle

Drawing Projects UK was created in 2009 to develop and promote research initiatives in drawing, including the Jerwood Drawing Prize project, now known as the Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize. In 2015,a centre for drawing and contemporary art at Bridge House in Trowbridge, Wiltshire wasestablished and the remit of Drawing Projects UK expanded to form a drawing network and community through a range of complementary activities. With a project space, exhibition space, workspaces for artists, designers, creative and cultural enterprises, bookable meeting rooms and cafe, Drawing Projects UK is a unique creative and cultural hub, and is conveniently located adjacent to Trowbridge railway station.

Join us for our Makers Talk with contemporary textile artist, Alice Kettle, on Saturday 14 September at 3pm.
Alice Kettle is a contemporary textile artist, writer and lecturer who has recently moved to Somerset. Her works use thread as a drawing tool and as a means to narrate contemporary events. More recently she has used thread and stitch in participatory collaborative projects. Her show Thread Bearing Witness at the Whitworth, Manchester 2018-19 engaged with refugee issues and migration. Kettle is currently Professor of Textile Arts at Manchester School of Art, Manchester Metropolitan University. She is Visiting Professor at the University of Winchester and Chair of the Embroiderers Guild. Her work is represented in various international public collections including the Whitworth, Manchester, the Crafts Council and the Hanshan ArtMuseum, Suzhou, China. She has co-authored, Machine Stitch Perspectives (2010), Hand Stitch Perspectives (2012), Collaboration through Craft (2013), The Erotic Cloth (2018) and MakingStories Ibook (2013). Held in association with the new Trowbridge Weavers Market, an artisan market held in the county town of Trowbridge on the second Saturday of the month the series, Makers Talk, aims to provide an in depth focus on the creative practice and motivations of influential makers and designers in the UK.
This Makers Talk event is part of the Heritage Open Day 2019 and Explore Art Trowbridge programme at Drawing Projects UK.
