Chaired by: Professor Tony CrookMeeting link for online viewers: https://meet.google.com/qay-zxzu-qkz?authuser=0 Abstract: John Henneberry&#x27;s applied research built a rich understanding of the structure and behaviour of real estate markets. At the heart of his empirical analysis was an ongoing interest in the role that state interventions have had in shaping market processes and outcomes. In this memorial lecture, the speakers will explore two themes that John studied extensively: land value capture and green infrastructure. The talks will outline recent research undertaken in collaboration with and influenced by Professor Henneberry and will seek to reflect the way in which he sought to make connections between the different strands of his research. In these cases, John helped encourage our reflections on the nature and meaning of value in the assessment of public policy interventions. The talks will reflect on the challenges that analysts and policy commentators have found in trying to broaden the notion of value in prevailing policy discourse beyond the narrow monetary understanding. In our view, it is essential that we do so, as John sought to, and that public policy analysis reflects on the value of interventions in the broadest sense and is also viewed in the context of the long-term challenges that society is facing. The purpose of this memorial lecture is to draw attention to the multiple rationalities of value and the disconnect between prevailing discourse - and assessment of the policy measures currently utilised to consider the value of planning - and the scale of the societal problems policy-makers must address. Using John&#x27;s pluralistic approach, that integrates social ontology and pragmatism, we examine the notion of lasting value through examples that John worked on: land value capture and green infrastructure.About John Henneberry: After graduating in Land Economy from Cambridge and studying planning as a postgraduate at The University of Sheffield, John worked for Manchester City Council and Greater Manchester County Council and became both a chartered planner and a chartered surveyor. John&#x27;s academic career started as Lecturer in Planning and Development at Sheffield Hallam University in 1980. In 1993 he moved to the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the University of Sheffield as Senior Lecturer and, subsequently, was appointed Reader, then Professor and sometime Head of the Department and the last Dean of the Faculty of Architectural Studies, overseeing its amalgamation with the Faculty of Social Science. He was elected a Fellow both of the Academy of Social Sciences in 2010 in recognition of his contribution to the field of planning and development and also of the Royal Town Planning Institute. He has made contributions to the academy through co-founding the &#x27;Issues in Real Estate&#x27; series (RICS / Wiley-Blackwell) as well as by serving as an Editor of Regional Studies and as a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Property Research, the Journal of European Real Estate Research and Town Planning Review. Sadly, we lost a gifted scholar, teacher and university leader in July 2021.
