Oh no!

It appears that after you and your friends entered a room in the spooky old hotel in Innsmouth—you were locked in! A newspaper in the room has an article about occult activities going on in the town and reports that newcomers have been disappearing after checking into the hotel. That sounds bad. You need to escape before the cult captures you! It looks like there might be a set of clues that you can follow to find the key to your room. You and your friends better start solving the puzzles quickly before time runs out!

The above is an example of an escape room. Escape rooms can consist of one or more rooms with a theme such as time travel, a haunted house, a zombie invasion etc where you have to solve a series of puzzles to “escape” the room. Normally, escape rooms are just for fun, but like most games they can be used to teach a variety of subjects—such as information literacy skills.

Please join CILIPinKent for a fun and informative afternoon with Andrew Walsh from the University of Huddersfield where he will walk us through the steps of creating our own escape rooms.

By the end of the workshop, attendees will have:

An understanding of the benefits of play in all levels of education
Knowledge on how to use learning objectives as the groundwork of a game
Knowledge on how to overcome constraints such as time and budget
A mapped-out plan for a fully-functional escape room with clever puzzles

In addition, all attendees receive a workbook and some prototyping materials.
