Event description

Description

The School of Design is excited to launch this short course which will explore some of the Islamic heritage that is present in the city of Birmingham (UK) and learn about the concepts and traditional design process involved in putting together manuscripts from different time periods and varying parts of the world.

The first session will take place at the Cadbury Research Library*, which is located on the Lower Ground floor of Muirhead Tower on the Edgbaston campus of the University of Birmingham. There we will be looking though Arabic, Farsi, and Turkish manuscripts (including Qurans, poetry texts, and others) from the Mingana collection, and learning about their history and also have a tour of the library. This session will be delivered by curator Neelam Hussain.

The following sessions will take place at Impact Hub Birmingham, and will explore the design elements*** of different types of manuscripts. Participants will be inroduced to the different features involved, and guided on how to design a basic manuscript page. Given the time and pace of the class, participants will then design their own basic manuscript page, or from a template, and work towards gathering the skills to complete their own manuscript page.

For some sessions all materials will be provided, and for others, participants will need to bring their own. This will be made clear via email nearer the time.

Please note the following dates and times of the sessions:

Session 1: 18th July, 4.30pm - 6.00pm, Cadbury Library, University of Birmingham

Session 2: 20th July, 11am - 3pm (with a break), Impact Hub Birmingham

Session 3: 25th July, 6.30 - 8.30pm, Impact Hub Birmingham

Session 4: 1st August, 6.30 - 8.30pm, Impact Hub Birmingham.

It is possible to book just the session at the Cadbury Library with the curator separately, the making part separately, but also the course as a whole.
