Making space for everyone: addressing perceptions of safety for inclusive parks.Wednesday 27th March – 6:30pm-7:30pm @ ZoomJoin us for an illuminating event hosted by the Landscape Institute East Midlands Branch.In this thought-provoking webinar, we delve into the critical topic of safety perceptions in our parks and green spaces. How can we design inclusive parks that foster a sense of security for all? Our guest speakers will explore strategies to improve access for women and girls in parks and addressing perceptions of safety through data and design in Doncaster.Safer Parks: Improving Access for Women &amp; GirlsSafety concerns are a considerable barrier to women and girls’ using and enjoying public spaces, which impacts on health and wellbeing, limits opportunities to socialise, and restricts outdoor exercise. This session presents new guidance <a href="https://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/198874/8/Safer%20Parks%20-%20Full%20Guidance.pdf" title="https://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/198874/8/Safer%20Parks%20-%20Full%20Guidance.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Safer Parks – Improving Access for Women and Girls</a> – which is based on in-depth <a href="https://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/194214/1/Parks%20Report%20FINAL%207.12.2022.pdf" title="https://eprints.whiterose.ac.uk/194214/1/Parks%20Report%20FINAL%207.12.2022.pdf" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">research by the University of Leeds</a>, rooted in women and girls’ views and lived experiences, and is informed by consultation with a range of practitioners and organisations, including parks managers, police, landscape architects, planners, academics, women’s safety organisations and other specialists. The guidance, developed in partnership by the University of Leeds, Keep Britain Tidy, Green Flag Award, Make Space for Girls and West Yorkshire Combined Authority, comprises 10 principles organised by three crucial themes (Eyes on the Park, Awareness and Inclusion) and various good practice case studies.Dr Anna Barker is an Associate Professor in Criminal Justice. She is passionate about making public spaces feel safe, convivial and inclusive. She led research into the views of women and girls towards the safety in parks, which has informed the development of new guidance Safer Parks – Improving Access for Women and Girls. The guidance contains principles and innovative case studies for improving safety and has been adopted as supplementary guidance to the Green Flag Award, the UK Government-owned international quality standard for parks and green spaces. She also co-founded the international Parks &amp; Green Spaces Research Portal.Helen Forman is an architect and housing professional with a career spanning the public, private and third sectors. She is the urban design lead at West Yorkshire Combined Authority and has expertise in the impacts of housing development on health and physical activity, particularly in children and older people. Her <a href="https://playingout.net/blog/designing-streets-for-play-research-and-observation/" title="https://playingout.net/blog/designing-streets-for-play-research-and-observation/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">research </a>for Playing Out CIC explored the link between residential layouts and children’s freedom to play and roam safely. Helen has collaborated with the University of Leeds to research women and girls’ perceptions and experience of safety in parks, and create Safer Parks guidance.Get Doncaster Moving: addressing perceptions of safety through data and design.Ben Russell Future Parks Manager, City of Doncaster CouncilAs one of Sport England’s funded Local Delivery Pilots, the Get Doncaster Moving Programme is taking a whole systems approach to addressing physical inactivity in Doncaster. Doncaster Future Parks sits within Get Doncaster Moving as one of our approaches to understand, influence, support and encourage parks usage as a factor contributing to residents leading an active lifestyle. The Local Delivery Pilot is enabling us to introduce and build on known and emerging practice around parks provision, whilst working at a hyper local level, understanding barriers to parks usage, and building sustainable change.
