Many Deadly Returns: Live Audio Event at Lancaster Castle Cafe

The Border Readers present live readings at Lancaster Castle Cafe of five very different short stories from Many Deadly Returns, the 2021 anthology of crime fiction by members of Murder Squad, an award winning association of northern based crime writers. The selection features a new Vera story by Ann Cleeves and one from Cath Staincliffe set in Victorian Blackpool and the castle.

The Border Readers are two highly experienced professional actors with strong local roots. Helen Longworth has appeared in a number of recent productions at the Dukes Theatre and is well known nationally for her role as Hannah the pig lady in The Archers on BBC Radio 4. Stephen Tomlin is a former castle guide who founded and ran Demi-paradise theatre company, producing a string of critically acclaimed popular promenade Shakespeare plays and Deck the Hall Christmas concerts in the Shire hall of the castle between 2000-16.

The Castle Café is a warm and welcoming contemporary space at the heart of Lancaster’s Grade 1 listed castle and former county gaol, run by Atkinsons Coffee Roasters, a local independent family business (est.1837). Knowledgeable and friendly bar staff will be on hand to offer audience members a cool range of fine wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks as well as their famous selection of coffees and teas.
