Description
Join us for a daring evening of Polaroid popping and an intimate screening of Mapplethorpe: Look At The Pictures, the acclaimed documentary by directors Fenton Bailey and Randy Barbato. “Look at the pictures!” In 1989 with these words, Senator Jesse Helms denounced the work of American artist Robert Mapplethorpe and created a controversy that went right to the US Senate.Made with unprecedented access to Mapplethorpe’s archives and work, the film lays bare the frank sexuality, intimate relationships and febrile environment that fed his work. Candid interviews with lovers, friends and subjects are accompanied by rediscovered, unheard interviews with Mapplethorpe himself.
The evening kicks off with a Polaroid workshop, where you can work 1-1, in couples or as you like with our artists to create your own unique Polaroid portrait using special sets inspired by Robert Mapplethorpe. Photographic materials provided, and you are welcome to bring your own props and outfits. We dare you!
Pop Up Polaroids runs 7-8pm and doors open 8pm for the screening.
Pay bar.
This event is presented as part of Scalarama, an annual DIY celebration of cinema running throughout September.
