What can go wrong between mothers and daughters? Who failed whom? An atmospheric movie by Maria Speth.

As part of our Goethe-Kino series, we will present Maria Speth&#x27;s Daughters (Töchter) on 27.10.2021 at the Institute. The film will also be available for viewing online for one week.It is a terrible moment when a mother has to step into a mortuary to identify what she is expects to be her missing daughter. Agnes has to face such an encounter, but the dead girl they show her isn’t her daughter. Perhaps it would have meant closure if she had been. Instead the uncertainty persists. Having travelled to Berlin from Hessia, Agnes decides to stay on to look for her daughter in the big city. On her aimless searches, she meets Ines, a young woman about her daughter’s age without permanent address, who, once she has entered Agnes’ life, makes herself at home in it. Agnes is torn between an inclination to help Ines and defending herself against her intrusion.Last December we showed Maria Speth’s film Madonnas which focused on a young woman who kept on having children though she knew she couldn’t take care of them. Her mother had to step in, a mother she felt had failed her. Agnes is not unlike this mother, cool, distanced and restrained. Did she fail her daughter? We aren’t told, we are just offered to observer her closely in her interactions with the challenging Ines, precisely framed by Speth’s preferred director of photography Reinhold Vorschneider, who also treats us to some atmospheric shots of Berlin.
