Cardiff Socialist Forum and others

An event to celebrate the life and works of Karl Marx, capitalism’s greatest ever critic. Marx was born 200 years ago but his ideas still have huge relevance to our world today. As we face the challenges of economic crisis, environmental disaster and global conflict now is the time to revisit Marx. His groundbreaking analysis of capitalism is still vital for anyone seeking to understand and change the world in which we live.
Saturday 23rd June, 1.30 - 6pm (inclusive Middle Eastern barbecue 6pm onwards), YMCA Plas (off City Rd), 2 Shakespeare St, Cardiff, CF24 3ES
Event Programme
1.00pm Venue open for entry
Refreshments (Tea, coffee, water) available and stalls open*.
*We will have a radical / Marxist bookstall with classic and contemporary books on a range of topics courtesy of the publisher Haymarket. There will also be a socialist stall from Swansea selling radical t-shirts, mugs, badges and so on as well as a general campaign stall for upcoming events such as the anti-Trump demonstration on 12th &amp; 13th July.
Guests will be asked to sign in if they have booked (no need to print anything off) and a limited number of tickets will be available on the day. Tickets are £3.80 or solidarity price of £7.60.
1.45pm: 21st Century Capitalism: Was Marx Right? With Jonny Jones
Capitalism is global. Most of what we consume, whether it is food or cinema, is produced by  groups of different workers  from across the world.  This system of global capitalism is the dominant political and economic model of our time. How does Marx's groundbreaking analysis of capitalism and the working class  stand up to the world of today? Why are his ideas still so relevant to understanding  this system and thinking about how it can be challenged?
Jonny is a PhD candidate at Queen Mary University of London. His research looks at the challenges and opportunities for trade union organising in the logistics sector. He was previously the deputy editor of International Socialism journal and has written numerous articles on subjects such as social movements and the environment.

3.00pm: The Rent is Too Damn High! Marx vs the Modern City. With Ruth Lorimer
The modern urban environment shapes an enormous part of our lives. It dictates where we work, where we live, how we move around and who we interact with. However, these things are not designed for the benefit of human development but for the maximisation of profit. What does Marx's critique of capitalism tell us about modern cities and how can they be radically changed?
Last year, Ruth travelled to Barcelona to research social movements against mass tourism as part of her PHD in Marxist urban theory. She has been involved in socialist politics for over a decade and previously completed a masters in urban geography, looking at housing activism in London

4.20pm: Marx and The Global Economic Crisis. With Heiko Feldner
This talk puts Marx in our shoes. What would the famous critic of capitalism make of the eco-economic catastrophe that is unfolding in uncanny slow motion before our eyes? What would he think of digital automation, AI and a carbon-free economy? If his unsettling story is true that capitalism’s unprecedented productivity gains are tethered to a compulsive economic expansion disorder destined to condemn us to a perverse scenario in which perishing in the face of plenitude is a distinct possibility, what can we do?
Heiko is a Reader in German &amp; Critical Theory and co-director of the Centre for Ideology Critique and Žižek Studies at Cardiff University. A former fellow at the Marx-Engels Complete Edition (MEGA) project, he has put his take on Marx to the test in a variety of fields. While his recent work focused on the 2008 global economic crisis, he is currently working on a future history of capitalism, entitled The Meaning of 1989.
5.20pm: Marx in 5 Minutes
This panel session will attempt to explain some of Marx's unique concepts in just 5 minutes!
Marxism and Democracy: With Adam Johannes
Adam became politically active in the early 2000s in the anti-globalisation and Stop the War movement. Currently Convenor of Cardiff People's Assembly who have organised successful campaigns to defend libraries and other city services and has published several articles on the impact of government 'welfare reform'on the poor and disabled.
Marxism and Race: With Sohaib Khan
Sohaib is an activist living in Cardiff who campaigned for Corbyn at last year’s general election. Originally from Pakistan, he has personal experience of the immigration system and is also campaigner for Palestinian justice.
Marxism , Sex and Gender. With Kat Burdon-Manley
Kat is a member of RS21, she is a student studying for a post graduate diploma in social work and is a member of the British Association of Social Workers. Kat will be speaking in a personal capacity.

6.00pm: Middle Eastern barbecue. All guests are invited to stay and enjoy some complementary food, drink and music.
7.00pm Special guest appearance by performance poet Rufus Mufasa 
Ticket price includes free tea and coffee throughout the day, free Middle Eastern barbecue and drink at the end. Limited places available.
