Description

Deborah Colam will be leading her second master class with Dover Arts Development for artists wanting to mount their own work in the safest way possible, from a conservation point of view. The class will include an afternoon surgery also open to those who attended the first Master class.

Morning session:

09.30: Tea/coffee

10:00: Start

1) A brief history of mounting

2) Discussion - things to consider before mounting: mount construction and aperture selection

3) A demonstration

LUNCH BREAK: Please bring a packed lunch

Afternoon surgery session: This session is also open to those who attended Deborah's first masterclass for a top up price of £5.

13.45: A chance to practice for yourself (materials provided) and ask for advice on specific problems.

  • V & T hinging
  • Hinging of artwork on thin or sensitive papers
  • Hinging for artwork on thick, heavy or distorted supports.

Please try and bring the following for the practical work:

  • Small scissors
  • Sharp Stanley
  • knife or scalpel
  • Steel rule
  • Bone folder
  • Thin watercolour brush
  • Pencil

Deborah Colam trained as a Paper Conservator at Camberwell School of Arts & Craft from 1978 – 1981. After further training at the Courtauld Institute and working for The Museum of London and Canterbury Cathedral Library & Archive she established Castle Fine Arts Studio in 1986. The studio has always combined a Paper Conservation workshop and framing service aimed primarily at museums and corporate clients. After having a gallery and workshops in Dover for 16 years, the studio moved into purpose-built premises in Guston in 2002.

The price is inclusive of materials.

General information:

Please arrive in time for a 10.00am start.

Parking: There is currently building work at the venue so please park by the allotments through the railway tunnel.

There is no disabled access so you will need to be able to manage steps.

If it is cold please dress in warm clothes.
