Event description

Description

CNaM Network, ASEN Edinburgh and the Alwaleed Centre are organising a Master class for PG students and staff:
Approaching the study of Multiculturalism, Secularism and Ethno-Religious Diversity

Speaker: Tariq Modood, MBE, FBA, FAcSS, is Professor of Sociology, Politics and Public Policy and the founding Director of the Centre for the Study of Ethnicity and Citizenship at the University of Bristol.

The master class will focus on the conceptual and methodological aspects of studying Multiculturalism, Ethnicity and ‘Otherness’. The focus will be on Professor Modood’s approach to the study of rising cultural racism (Islamophobia) as well as his understanding of multicultural citizenship, of how minority identities, including those formed by race, ethnicity and religion, can be incorporated into national identities and a moderate secularism so that all can have a sense of belonging together.

For whom would like to have a little taster of Prof. Modood’s take on Multiculturalism: https://discoversociety.org/2018/12/04/majorities-minorities-and-multiculturalism/

The master class will be an informal and friendly event and a wonderful opportunity for those doing research in the field of ethnicity, identity, multiculturalism and culture more broadly.

Participants will receive a small package of selected readings that will help to prepare for the master class.

Places are limited! Please do commit to attending the master class should you sign up.

Participants who are interested in joining us for lunch at noon at The Alwaleed Centre, please send an email to andreas.zaunseder@ed.ac.uk. Details about the venue will follow together with the prep package for the master class

We encourage participants to join the preceding lecture by Prof Modood at 1pm at the Teviot Lecture Theatre – Doorway 5.
