Event description

Description

The films and videos of Basma Alsharif explore the subjective experience of political landscape, investigating the links between a geographical space and its mental representation. Born in Kuwait of Palestinian origin, Alsharif’s nomadic existence – brought up in France and the United States, she has lived in Beirut, Amman, Cairo, Paris, and is currently based in Los Angeles– is deeply embedded in her work, which often experiments with ideas of bi-location and the figure of the double. Whether working with photography, film, video, sound, text or language, the representation of Palestine as a place where the constant feeling of threat and the ever-changing geographical borders produce a sense of unreal is a crucial subject in Alsharif’s work and her on-going interrogation of the relationship between history and the human condition. In this public lecture, Basma Alsharif will present a number of her films and discuss her artistic practice.

The Gap Between Us, Basma Alsharif’s first UK solo show is on at the Mosaic Rooms until 31 March 2018. Basma Alsharif will also give a talk at Mosaic rooms on Wednesday 28 March, followed by a conversation with Maria Palacios Cruz, LUX Deputy Director.

Basma Alsharif is an Artist/Filmmaker born in Kuwait of Palestinian origin, raised between France, the US and the Gaza Strip. She has a BFA and an MFA from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She works between cinema and installation, with an interest in the human condition in relation to shifting geopolitical landscapes and natural environments. Major exhibitions include: the Whitney Biennial, les Rencontres d’Arles, Les Modules at the Palais de Tokyo, Here and Elsewhere at the New Museum, Al Riwaq Biennial Palestine, The Berlin Documentary Forum, the Sharjah Biennial, and Manifesta 8.
