Functional effect systems like ZIO, Monix, and Cats IO have brought next-generation, fiber to the JVM, years before Project Loom. But mastering these new effect systems is not easy, because developers have to rethink thread management, resource management, concurrency, parallelism, and other aspects of application architecture, as well as learn to embrace asynchronous concurrent data structures, like queues, promises, maps, and more.
In this two day workshop, you will build upon your knowledge of Scala’s own Future data type to gradually and systematically develop a mastery functional effect systems, culminating in a graduation project that you will develop using ZIO, Monix, or Cats IO.

<h3>Topics</h3>• For Comprehensions. Scala’s for comprehensions provide a convenient syntax to create sequential workflows that involve a mixture of async and concurrent steps, with resource and error handling. You will learn how to express complex application logic using for comprehensions, as well as how to use for comprehensions with conditionals, recursion, pattern matching, and mixed data types (Option, Future, Try, etc.).
• Fibers. Fiber-based concurrency systems provide lightweight green threads, which leads to significantly better scalability than system-level threads. You will learn all about fibers, including a detailed comparison of the differences between threads and fibers, and what to look out for as you transition from thread-based concurrency and parallelism to fiber-based concurrency and parallelism.
• Interop. Functional effect systems are designed to easily and safely interop with ordinary code, including synchronous code, asynchronous code, and concurrent code, as well as Scala’s Future. You will learn all about interop between legacy code, Future-based code, and other systems that do not presently use functional effect systems.
• Effectful Tail Recursion. Functional effect systems require recursion to perform looping, but in order to avoid any memory leaks, all recursion must be tail recursion. You will learn what tail recursion is, why it is important, and how to use tail recursion to perform effectful loops that run forever without leaking any stack or heap space.
• Error Handling. Functional effect systems propagate errors across asynchronous and concurrent boundaries, and allow raising and recovering from different failure scenarios in synchronous, asynchronous, and concurrent code. You will learn how to leverage automatic error propagation and safely raise and recover from errors.
• Thread Pool Management. Functional effect systems allow running parts of an application on different thread pools, which is often required to interact with third-party code that places specific requirements on execution of work. You will learn how to guarantee certain parts of your code execute on different thread pools, as well as learn best practices around thread pool management.
• Blocking IO. Functional effect systems generally require that code that performs blocking IO (including thread sleeping, JDBC, and use of legacy blocking file/socket libraries) run outside the main thread pool for optimal performance. You will learn how to write code that guarantees your blocking actions are performed on a suitable blocking thread pool.
• Parallelism. Functional effect systems allow trivial parallelism, both unbounded parallelism, and also constrained parallelism. You will learn how to unlock the power of any number of cores on a machine, effectively increasing application throughput, and decreasing latency for mission-critical tasks.
• Asynchronicity. Like Future before them, functional effect systems provide a powerful way to write asynchronous code, without the pain of callbacks or manual error propagation. You will learn how to translate callback-based APIs into functional effects.
• Testability. Due to limitations of the underlying languages, functional effect systems provide a unique set of tradeoffs in designing fully testable systems. You will learn a variety of techniques that enable you to test code written against any functional effect system.
• Tagless-final. Tagless-final is a technique used to abstract over concrete effect types, and provides a way to test programs, as well as a way to statically document which APIs a given part of code uses. You will learn enough tagless-final to understand and use the technique in your own applications.
• Troubleshooting. Like Future, functional effect systems, because they use fibers to execute all work, pose unique challenges for troubleshooting failures. You will learn about different techniques and tools you can use to effectively troubleshoot concurrent and asynchronous code written using functional effect systems.
• Concurrency. Functional effect systems allow concurrent execution of code, even on single-threaded environments, and provide tools to avoid race conditions and deadlocks. You will learn how concurrency works in functional effect systems, how to port your existing concurrency knowledge over to a functional effect system, and how to avoid common pitfalls when writing concurrent code.
• Concurrent Structures. Functional effect systems allow the design and development of asynchronous, concurrent data structures, which escape the pervasive blocking of commonly-known concurrent primitives on the JVM (java.util.concurrent). You will learn how to use and build concurrent structures using state-of-the-art techniques.
