Materiality: an exhibition celebrating the importance of materials through contemporary sculpture and installation art

Fiona Campbell, Kelly M O’Brien, Kate McDonnell and Nicola Turner are exhibiting together for the first time in Materiality – an exhibition celebrating the importance of materials through contemporary sculpture and installation art. This exhibition showcases large-scale objects and interventions into the architecture of Walcot Chapel.Each artist is engaged with sustainability in their practices and they are driven by their materials in the first instance. Curator and artist Kate McDonnell says: “Materials – the stuff that artists work with – have become a way of loading artworks with meaning, and each artist in this exhibition holds materiality at the heart of their critically-engaged practice.” In her seminal book Documents of Contemporary Art: Materiality, Petra Lange-Berndt says that “To follow the material means to enter a true maze of meanings”. Leaning on the political, social and psychological interpretations of materials, the artists allow their chosen materials to talk to wider issues. In these works form becomes the servant of the materials. Nicola Turner says, “I am fascinated by how materials are soaked with a lived history, how we are entangled with the ecosystems within us and around us and how ‘dead’ matter gives off an energy that is life-affirming.”EventsCelebrate the opening of our show at the Materiality Private View on Tuesday, 26th April, 6pm to 8pm.You are also welcome to join us at our After Party at the Bell Inn, Walcot Street from 8pm. Numbers are limited so book your place now!Join us for our Sculpture Workshop on Sunday, 1st May, 11am - 1pm, with artist Fiona Campbell. Focusing on flora and fauna, you will be creating a sculpture using recycled and found materials, including copper wire, netting, twine, wood and other found objects. We will explore form, surface, colour, material and the concept of transformation. The workshop will encourage an inventive approach, finding new ways of making sculptural work. Materials will be transformed into an imaginative piece for your home or garden. For ages 10+ to adult!Tickets: £12. Numbers are limited so book your place now!Our Artist Talks Event will take place on Sunday, 1st May, 2.30-3.30pm. This is an informal, in depth look at the works and our practices.
