** This training is only available to West Lothian Council staff, please ensure you book using your Council email address. Any bookings made using other email addresses will be cancelled. **

Please do not park at Whitdale as parking is limited and is for Whitdale staff, residents and visitors only. There is parking available at the Cemetery which is located just behind Whitdale. Please arrive at 9am for the training, please do not attend earlier than 9am as this causes disruption for staff and residents at Whitdale. Upon arrival, please use the day centre door and not the main entrance door.

Medication Practical is a mandatory session and as with the original full day medication training is an approved course which will be delivered by a pharmacist with appropriate clinical qualifications and expertise in this area.

The course has an assessed element which will assess competency on the day. These will be marked post training and managers advised of any issue within approx. 5 working days. Thereafter, continuing competency will be monitored through your line management structure.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of the session you will have refreshed your knowledge and demonstrated you competency in the following areas:-

Ø Understand the different classes of medication

Ø Know the different forms of medication and the routes of administration

Ø The importance of strength, dosage, frequency and timing

Ø Understand the difference between generic and brand names

Ø Know what should appear on medicine labels

Ø Understand what is meant by homely remedies

Ø Understand the Council’s and your Service’s policy on medication

Ø Have an understanding of the law and handling medication

Ø Understand what is involved in the administration of medication to clients

Ø Know what records need to be completed in relation to medication

Ø Understand how to support clients and adapt to their different needs

Ø Understand your role in the self-administration of medicines

Ø Know how clients should be monitored after medicines have been administered

Ø Know what to do in the event of a medicine error.

Ø Know where to find information on medicines
