Help us find the medieval graffiti in St Mary Redcliffe Church!

Did you know that hidden in the stones of St Mary Redcliffe are strange marks and symbols scratched into the stone by people hundreds of years ago?Some of these are mason’s marks that were carved by the craftsmen who helped build the church. Others are Christian symbols used to ward off evil (apotropaic symbols). St Mary Redcliffe is embarking on a project to discover and catalogue its surviving medieval graffiti. Until now there has been no organised attempt to identify and catalogue these fascinating marks that can help give us an insight into the lives and beliefs of people living in medieval times. Consequently, it is likely that there is much more to be found.Following in the footsteps of the award winning Norfold Medieval Graffiti Survey and using reference tools developed during that project, we will be finding, photographing and cataloguing the graffiti of St Mary Redcliffe before making our findings available online.Why not join us as we embark on what should be a fascinating project. The first session will take place on the afternoon of Friday 25 August from 2:30pm - 5:00pm.
