Methodological Reflections on a Mixed Method Re-Study of Dining Out

In this seminar, Professor Alan Warde will discuss the methodological issues of a re-study after 20 years of dining out.

<p>This seminar forms part of the <a href="https://research-training-centre.sps.ed.ac.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Research Training Centre</a>&#x27;s Talking Methods seminar series delivered in association with the <a href="https://www.sgsss.ac.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Scottish Graduate School of Social Science </a>(SGSSS). </p><p></p><h2>Abstract</h2><p>This talk discusses a project studying the practice of dining out in England between 1995 and 2015. Based on a re-study in three cities – Bristol, London and Preston – it investigated change and continuity in the practice of eating out. The original and the repeat study both employed both a survey and qualitative interviews. I will discuss some issues regarding the integration of quantitative and qualitative analysis. I will also address problems associated with the systematic comparison of data collected at two points in time even when using very similar protocols. I will consider various phases of the project – research design, data collection procedures, methods of analysis, and processes of interpretation and writing. I will pay special attention to the last of these, partly in light of Michael Burawoy’s methodological injunctions about the conduct of re-studies.   </p><p></p><h2>Biography</h2><p>Alan Warde is Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Manchester. His research interests include consumption, food, cultural participation, stratification and social theory. He has conducted many empirical research projects using a wide variety of methods. The most recent large-scale project was a re-study of dining out, with Jessica Paddock and Jennifer Whillans, which was published in 2020 by Manchester University Press as The Social Significance of Dining Out.
