Carbon capture, storage and utilisation (CCUS) has been identified as one of the essential pathways for achieving climate neutrality and energy security. This emerging and promising industry has many challenges that needs immediate attention. Lack of accurate and traceable measurement infrastructure which underpins the success of CCUS industry is a significant challenge, among others. In this workshop, experts from across the value chain will discuss the measurement challenges (emissions, gas quality, corrosion, leaks and performance evaluation of materials), ongoing research & development work and potential solutions. The overall aim of the workshop is to discuss metrological needs and disseminate existing knowledge for enabling safe, sustainable, and cost effective CCUS at scale.

13.15 - Traceable and accurate gas metrology infastructure to support CO2 gas quality and performance evaluation of materials - Dr. Manohara Gudiyor (NPL) - This presentation gives overview of importance of CO2 gas quality and performance evaluations of materials, current status and knowledge gaps. Role of traceable gas standards, accurate analytical techniques, calibration/validation of analysers which underpins the reliable measurements will be discussed.

13.30 - Monitoring methods development for the CCUS industry - Haydn Barros, Jon Helmore and Dr. Freya Malcher (NPL) - Currently, there are no standard methods for monitoring CCUS emissions. The degradation products of amine-based CO2 capture plants (such as NH3, amines, and nitrosamines) pose a risk to health and the environment due to their toxicity. Furthermore, it is necessary to detect and quantify CO2 emissions, both from above surface infrastructure and in underwater settings. This talk showcases NPL's progress in these areas.

14.00 - Towards a standardised methodology for corrosion testing of pipeline steel in dense phase CO2 - Dr. Shravan Kairy (NPL) - This presentation highlights the importance of reliable corrosion testing and the need for standardised methods to ensure safe CO₂ pipeline transport in CCUS applications. It outlines the current progress in standardisation efforts and addresses the challenges of assessing pipeline steel corrosion in impurity-containing dense phase CO₂.
