You are cordially invited to the second Michael McCarthy Memorial Lecture in University College’s Great Hall (Durham Castle).

'Russia-A Riddle wrapped in a Mystery, inside an Enigma?' will be given by former UK Defence and Foreign Secretary The Rt Hon Sir Malcolm Rifkind KCMG QC. Following the lecture, we would be honoured to extend a special invitation to all of our dinner guests to join us for a drinks reception and a formal dinner with Sir Malcolm. Proceeds from the dinner will be used to support the Michael McCarthy Memorial Travel Bursary, which enables University College students to visit the US for the purposes of enhancing their studies.

About Michael McCarthy

Michael was born in 1974, grew up in Bethesda, Maryland and graduated with distinction from the University of Virginia in 1996. From 2000-2003 he took two Master’s degrees at Durham, as a member of University College: an MA in International Boundaries in the Departments of Geography and Law, and a Master of Jurisprudence degree (Law) researching international border disputes. He then took a Juris Doctorate degree at Georgetown University Law Center in Washington, D.C., and was admitted to the Bar in the District of Columbia and in Maryland where he practised as a successful lawyer specialising in property, wills and trusts.

Michael died suddenly of an undiagnosed heart condition in May 2012, leaving behind one-year-old son Hugh, wife Maura and loving parents Mary and Michael.

 Travel Bursary

To commemorate Michael’s life in a way that reflects, amongst other things, his having been an Anglophile, his deep affection for Durham University and University College, where he was an active member of the postgraduate community, and his strong belief in the importance of the US-UK alliance, former University College student John Slinger worked with the College to establish a Memorial Fund to raise money to help University College students visit the US for the purposes of enhancing their studies, thereby being a living memorial to a man who sadly died too young.
