Migration and Climate Change

Negative stereotypes and broken systems in the UK mean that 75% of refugees and migrants have no opportunities beyond low-paid, entry-level employment. ACH aims to redefine, recentre and rebuild this process to end the cycle of poverty.Our vision is to empower refugees and migrants who reside in the UK to lead self-sufficient and ambitious lives. We believe that increased access to support, training and education creates spaces and opportunities for people to thrive.ACH is a social enterprise comprised of a diverse group of strategists and researchers led by lived experience. We provide tailored integration services that not only help individuals, but also disrupt the systems that have entrenched inequalities in our society. We have a track record of delivering effective support services that give refugees and migrants the tools they need to succeed.

Our second seminar of the year examines the links between climate change and migration, bridging the gap between research and delivery.

Climate change is the biggest threat our planet faces, and could re-shape global patterns of migration and displacement. 
The climate crisis is likely to reinforce pre-existing inequalities, both internationally, nationally and locally. Since 2010, weather emergencies have forced 21.5 million people a year to move<a href="https://news.un.org/en/story/2021/04/1090432#:~:text=Climate%20change%20link%20to%20displacement%20of%20most%20vulnerable,floods%2C%20droughts.%20...%203%20Hosts%20hit%20too.%20" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> (UNHCR, 2021)</a>. According to the UNHCR, an estimated 90% of refugees come from countries that are the most vulnerable and least likely to have contributed to global emissions.
It’s impact will have far-reaching effects into all of our lives, but it’s unprecedented consequences will not affect us all equally. It is communities who contribute the least to global carbon emissions who will be affected the most.
This seminar will delve into the threats and inequalities faced by people at risk of forced migration due to climate change, as well as those from a refugee or migrant background.
