Review:

In 1972, music producer Harvey Averne discovered an eleven-year old Puerto Rican boy singing at the airport. So entranced was he by his charisma and voice that he took him under his wing and produced the boy’s debut album, Miguelito Canto A Borinquen. Miguelito’s music was played on every radio station and in record store and brought child musicians into popularity. After the success of the album, Miguelito mysteriously disappeared, his fans unable to say if he was dead or alive. Director Sam Zubrycki goes on a journey to uncover what happened to the talented singer. His quest takes him to New York in search of Harvey, and all the way to Puerto Rico, where his family bring to light how how the release of the album affected Miguelito.

Starting with a simple question, Miguelito’s journey probes into the darker realities of the music industry. The film explores the conflict of interest between Harvey’s business-minded dedication to bring a fresh voice to the music scene and Miguelito’s poor family, who felt unsupported throughout the process. Cutting between New York and Puerto Rico, the story is also brought to life by music performances which recreate the music scene and culture out of which Miguelito sang.
