Our natural history training programme includes courses on ecology, biological recording and identification, all taught be subject specialists with a passion for their chosen species group!

The genus Andrena contains the mining bees and is the largest bee genus in Britain &amp; Ireland, with around 70 species. With so many species within a single genus, it is not surprising that identifying mining bees to species can be quite tricky.This microscope-based course will start with a brief introduction to the ecology and biology of mining bees, before delving into the identification features that are used to separate different species from one another. Learners will work through the mining bee teaching collection of preserved specimens, using ID keys to reach a species determination. Our bee specialist will be on hand to advise if species determinations are correct and provide feedback when learners have difficulties.

What will be covered during this course?<ul><li>The morphological features used in mining bee identification.</li><li>How to work through an identification key to determine mining bee specimens accurately to species level.</li><li>Practical experience observing mining bee ID features using a microscope and specimen collection.</li><li>It is recommended that participants have some experience of bee identification and a basic overview of British bees.</li></ul>Please note that this course will involve using specimens that have been killed and preserved.

Course resourceThe teaching text for this course is the Field Guide to the Bees of Great Britain and Ireland by Steven Falk as part of the Bloomsbury Wildlife Guides series in 2018 (formerly British Wildlife Field Guides and originally printed in 2015).If you have your own copy, we strongly encourage you to bring it along as there are discrepancies between reprints so it is best if you have your own copy with you for making notes.

Bee Specialist: Dr Abigail LoweDr Abigail Lowe is a Community Science Officer at the Natural History Museum, where she leads the delivery of Nature Overheard. Her PhD research, undertaken at the National Botanic Garden of Wales and Bangor University used DNA metabarcoding to investigate pollinator foraging and led to a huge interest in biological recording and community science.

N﻿atural History Museum, LondonT﻿his course will take place in the Angela Marmont Centre for UK Nature, located within the Natural History Museum (London). Each Learner will have access to a microscope to use for the duration of the course in the behind-the-scenes classroom.T﻿his course is delivered by the Biological Recording Company and Natural History Museum.

F﻿ees and refund policy<ol><li> ﻿Course attendee ticket (£50) grants access to the training course. </li></ol>Ticket fees include an administrative fee of 20% that is non-refundable. This consists of approximately 10% for Eventbrite fees and 10% for time spent by the Biological Recording Company processing the order.Further cancellation charges will also be incurred for the following:<ul><li>﻿10% cancellation fee for cancellations made over 90 days in advance of the date of the course</li><li>3﻿0% cancellation fee for cancellations made within between 30 and 90 days of the date of the course </li><li>8﻿0% cancellation fee for cancellations made within 30 days of the date of the course</li></ul>
