Money From Mars - Workshop

A workshop to imagine money and finance in New Space economies.

Humans are on the edge of living in space full-time, meaning space-based economies soon follow. Various films and stories have imagined forms of money for space—whether on a planet, interstellar craft, or some other platform, but we have little recent concrete speculation about the new financial instruments and products that may emerge, especially considering how time, connection and needs change radically off-Earth. This 90-minute workshop will give participants the building blocks and frames with which to develop speculative financial products for New Space economies, and consider how they might catch the eye of spacefaring folk in the near future. 
 
Bio: Scott Smith is a futurist and founder of Changeist, a research and consulting partnership based in the The Hague. With almost 20 years in futures, Scott and his team have consulted to a range of global institutions, including SWIFT, UNICEF, The IFRC, AXA, ASOS, BBC R&D, Nesta, and the Dubai Future Foundation. He created and led the futures design programme at the Dubai Future Academy, and has taught at IED Barcelona, and guest lectured at the RCA, SOIF, Sci-ARC, LCC and IaaC. He is the author of “How to Future: Leading and Sense-Making in an Age of Hyperchange,” published by Kogan Page Inspire.

Bio: John Willshire runs Smithery, a consultancy he founded in 2011. All of his work is rooted in the idea that it is better to help organisations make things people want rather than make people want things. Smithery’s clients include Konica Minolta, Experian, Unilever, Innovate UK, BBC, LEGO, Dstl, and The Royal Society amongst others. John is also a visiting professor at IED in Barcelona, where he leads their annual summer Innovation and Future Thinking course, and has worked with the RCA and LCC amongst other institutions.
