Moniuszko's Opera "Flis"

The Polski Ośrodek Społeczno-Kulturalny (POSK) is the Polish Social and Cultural Association in London. It was founded in 1964, at the initiative of Polish engineer Roman Wajda and financed by donations from Polish émigré organisations and individuals. The building was opened in 1974 and houses the Polish Library in London, which was founded in 1942. POSK promotes Polish culture with concerts, exhibitions, film screenings, theatre performances and a regular jazz club. There is also a Polish cafe and a restaurant.

<P>After the success of his opera "Halka" <SPAN>Stanisław Moniuszko</SPAN><SPAN> </SPAN>was made director of the National Opera in Warsaw.  In 1858 he travelled to Paris to dedicate time to composition. Legend has it that during a very hot 4 days the composer isolated himself in his hotel room and wrote the whole opera Flis.</P>
<P>The story is set in<SPAN> a town of raftsmen by the Wisla river and </SPAN>revolves around two young lovers  who are not allowed to marry because the father of the girl "Zosia" had previously promised her to another young man "Jakub" (who is a hairdresser in Warsaw!). Disillusioned, Franek goes off in search of his long lost brother, only to find that his brother is actually the hairdresser in Warsaw! The score is full of Polish folk-influenced tunes, prayers and national rhythms including the Kujawiak.</P>
<P>All-star cast featuring international opera star Ania Jeruc. Staged by Director Feliks Tarnawski and conducted by Stephen Ellery this production with the Polish Opera in London, POSK, aims to bring the works of Moniuszko into the repertoire of opera theatres around the world. This is the culmination of 6 years of work leading to the 2019 bicentenary of the birth of Moniuszko during which other operas by Moniuszko (Verbum Nobile, Halka, Straszny Dwor, Hrabina and Pariah) have all had their first ever London stagings at the Polish Opera in London POSK.</P>
