Event description

Description

Rounding off the exclusive series of ‘Monument Masterclass’ events this autumn, The Monument, one of London’s most historic attractions, invites you to enjoy talks in partnership with renowned literary salon, 5x15 on Thursday 9th November.

From one of the best vantage points high above the streets of London, this masterclass will explore the theme of the evolving relationship between nature and the built environment, taking inspiration from a constantly changing city skyline still shaped by the lasting impact of the Great Fire of London in 1666.

Following on from the success of Simon Callow’s poetry reading during last year’s Great Fire 350 commemorations, Dr Matthew Green and Melissa Sterry will entertain an audience with tales of the city streets below, uniting an historical and future-forward talk about Nature and the City. Both will tell their story in a one-off event beginning in the piazza and ending on the famous viewing platform at the top of The Monument.

Dr Matthew Green will give an historical perspective about how the City and nature developed together and Melissa will talk about biophilic design/ future of nature in the City.

The Monument, designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1671-1677 to commemorate the Great Fire of London, is 202ft high and stands 202ft from where the fire started in Pudding Lane. It is the tallest isolated stone column in the world and has been open to visitors for over 300 years. Today it welcomes over 200,000 visitors every year.

Cost: £20.00 per person.

Time: 19.15. Please arrive 15 minutes early for a prompt start.

The ‘Monument Masterclasses’ are a series of exclusive evening masterclass events taking place at The Monument: from Urban Bird Watching (Thursday 7th September) to immersive storytelling experience Stairwell Stories (Thursday 5th October) and talks from some of the city’s best-known speakers programmed with 5x15 (Thursday 9th November). Each event explores the evolving relationship between nature and the built environment of the City.
