Morphological Computation – Intelligent Bodies for Intelligent Robots

From 1 February to 29 February, Central Saint Martins’ Digital Innovation Season will explore and celebrate creativity in the digital space. This platform offers public talks and workshops for CSM students.The 2024 edition will focus on ‘Planetary Sensing’. This takes a ‘planetary’ perspective related to the climate crisis, social impact, and learning, teaching and research that engage cutting edge technologies like AI, IoT, wearables, and spatial computing. Rather than imagining a schism between the local and the global, a planetary perspective considers the material conditions of the planet - and how the earth understands and communicates through arrays of satellites, sensors, swarms, and servers that influence geographies, climate, and societies.

Onsite Morphological Computation workshop led by Helmut Hauser

We aim to notify you of our decision as promptly as possible.</p><h3>All biological systems use clever body morphologies to interact successfully in a complex world. As a result, they are remarkably robust, resilient and versatile. The idea of morphological computation is trying to adopt this principle for building intelligent bodies for intelligent robots to achieve similar performances. In this workshop we will explore how a good body morphology can help a robot to be better. In small groups we will design and build our own little locomoting robots that should exploit their morphologies. At the end of the workshop we will hold a competition to see who has the best design.

<p><a href="https://www.morphologicalcomputation.org/about" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Helmut Hauser</a> is an Associate Professor in Robotics at the University of Bristol.  Helmut is a leading expert  in <a href="https://www.morphologicalcomputation.org/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">morphological computation</a>, which tries to understand how clever body morphologies can help robots to be more adaptive, robust, and energy-efficient. The approach is inspired by biological systems which have remarkable morphologies which help them to outperform even state-of-the-art robotic systems.  Helmut’s work includes, among other things, computing with octopus arms, signal-processing in spiderwebs, and growing robots using stem cells. He is also the Principal Investigator of the UK-RAS Strategic Task Group for Soft Robotics and the <a href="https://www.farscope.bris.ac.uk/research-themes" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Director of the Centre for Doctoral Training in Future Autonomous and Robotics Systems</a>.</p>
