Moth & Bat Safari - Farthing Downs

Experience Farthing Downs after dark on this ranger-led moth and bat safari exploring the hidden world of nocturnal wildlife.

As the sun sets over the chalk grassland, we will use bat detectors to listen out for bats hunting overhead, transforming their ultrasonic calls into sounds we can hear. We will also run a light trap to attract and identify some of the moth species active on the Downs, from delicate grass moths to larger hawk-moths.

Farthing Downs’ open chalk grassland and wildflower-rich habitat provide an important feeding ground for bats, moths, and many other night-flying insects. Dark skies are especially important for these species, helping bats navigate and allowing insects to behave naturally without disruption from artificial lighting.

With a bit of luck, we may also spot glow worms glowing amongst the grassland slopes; a rare and special sight in London. These remarkable beetles use their green bioluminescent glow to attract mates during summer evenings.

The walk will be led by a City of London Ranger, who will share more about the wildlife and conservation of this unique landscape as darkness falls across the Downs.

• Families welcome (under 16's must be accompanied by an adult)
• No dogs, please
• We'll be walking across rough and undulating terrain, so wear sturdy footwear
• Please bring a torch and warm clothing for a dusk walk

£10 per person - Your contribution will help us run events like these and various conservation projects on the four Coulsdon Commons that benefit people and wildlife.
