Over almost three decades Henley Halebrown have been exploring a human centred architecture, one that sees society as its foundation.

Their work has covered an unusually wide breadth of building types, from health and housing to commercial and education, resulting in many awards and twice being shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize. This presentation will revisit three schemes – TalkBack, Copper Lane and Hackney New Primary School &amp; 333 Kingsland Road – that have developed the studio’s thinking and is aimed at seeding a dialogue challenging us to consider how architecture can help to address the immense challenges that face our society.TalkBack was voted Best in Europe Office in 2004. This 100% naturally ventilated office in London used existing buildings to provide truly flexible workspace, with external circulation through herb gardens between four buildings designed to include office, dining, film studio and residential elements.“Spaces are designed not so much for specific activities as for inhabitation, pure and simple.” – Irina Davidovci, 2002.Copper Lane was London’s first co-housing scheme bringing six households together into a shared living experience. A decade later, the practice is still in contact with the community and have learnt much (good and bad) from this experience. It is a space for people in the community who are at different stages of their lives, originate from different areas of the world, have different histories and trajectories.“What has brought us together is the desire to live lower impact lives in London, a commitment to sharing resources, and to consensus as a form of decision making appropriate to this form of collective living” – Copper Lane residents, 2012.Hackney New Primary School &amp; 333 Kingsland Road was shortlisted for the RIBA Stirling Prize in 2022. These two buildings (school and housing) confront the realities of the increasing density in our cities. The school, facilitated by cross subsidy from the housing, has resulted in a naturally ventilated courtyard school that sits at the heart of its local inner-city community. The project was awarded the RIBA Neave Brown Award and the Stirling Prize People’s Vote.“This is a highly-intelligent response to providing critical social infrastructure – a thoughtful and generous set of spaces for residents and the local community to live, learn and play in,” – Simon Allford, 2022
