M﻿ULTISPECIES ARCHITECTURESAll life forms are enmeshed in other life forms. The difference between one species and another – plant, rock, animal, human, machine, god – is never absolute. ‘Species’ is a label that can be applied only retroactively, after a long series of interactions between different energies and entities. Architecture is spatial, temporal, social, and relational. It can also be evolutionary, cognitive, acoustic, kinaesthetic, and algorithmic, among other examples. Concerned with the design and process of construction, all architecture is generative: it shapes behaviours and sculpts time. Ants, bees, birds, and beavers are all architects. From the simplest snail to the most complex nautilus, molluscs build their houses around their bodies and carry them wherever they go. Spiders weave webs; caterpillars spin cocoons. Microscopic organisms – bacteria and fungi – ‘memorise’ the information obtained from the environment in the form of embodied knowledge. Similar auto-poetic processes can be found in newer-generation algorithms increasingly capable of modifying themselves. Present-day neural networks, too, create auto-productive developmental architectures, through iteration, repetition, and recursion.
