_____________
The backstory:
He called me ‘mutton dressed as lamb’ as I stood holding up the Metro newspaper just below the Sloane Square underground logo, waiting for my partner to take a picture of me.
I was celebrating the fact that I had dared myself to wear my leopard print hat in public, not just in the ‘safety’ of my own spaces.
I usually keep my hat in my ‘shy bag’, packed away from public view until I get to the event.
That day, I braced myself to walk all the way up the King’s Road from Chelsea Town Hall to Sloane Square in an ‘out there’ outfit.
I was wearing my leopard print hat, turquoise t-shirt, black trousers and gold cowboy boots.
Having just celebrated my 55th birthday two weeks earlier I was en route to the Best Business Women of the Year finalists' drinks event at Embankment.
However, I was totally knocked off my perch when I heard those words muttered in passing.
Quiet, yet loud enough to have a cacophonous effect on my self-esteem for a hot minute or so.
To make me question what I was wearing and why.
When I shared this story on LinkedIn, hundreds of comments poured in from people who'd been called:
Too loud. Too basic. Too colourful. Too fancy. Too non-corporate. Too flashy.
Just... TOO MUCH.
That's when I knew we needed to do something about it.
Welcome to the MUTTON MARCH.
Why March? It's International Women's Month. Why march? Because we CAN. 💪🏻💪🏾
Think if it as a Walking Festival or a Walking Ascot!
