My Wild City: BioBlitz at Stockwood Open Space
Date and time
Join us on this epic mission to spot as much wildlife as possible at this spectacular site!
About this event
Are you a bird spotter, plant lover, tree hugger? Would you like to learn more about the wildlife on your doorstep? Or enjoy a wild day outside? Then this is for you!
Come along to BioBlitz at Stockwood Open Space - a wildlife haven made up of ancient woodland, ponds, wildflower meadows and an orchard!
A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. The main goal of a BioBlitz is to get an overall count of the plants, animals, fungi, and other organisms that live in a place. Exciting!
What's more is that it's also the City Nature Challenge weekend - a global citizen science project to collect information about our local wildlife. In 2022, 400+ cities across the world will be out finding and recording as much wildlife as possible to help track how nature is bouncing back this spring! Bristol is taking part - can we get Bristol to the top wildlife spotting city in the world?!
Taking part is easy! Simply download the iNaturalist app to your smartphone or tablet and use it to upload photos of any wildlife you see during the BioBlitz. We'll be on hand to help guide you through the process and we'll support you to find out what lives in Stockwood Open Space. For more information check out City Nature Challenge.
You don’t have to be an expert, as the app will give you some handy suggestions of what it thinks you’ve seen, and you can join the iNaturalist online community to learn more about the wildlife around you. Best of all, the records you submit will help inform local and national conservation work!
For teeny tots we'll have some wildlife spotting sheets and we'll provide site maps to guide you on your journey.
This is a drop-in session.
We'll also be running an 'Orchard Mapping May Day 'celebration in the orchard at Stockwood Open Space at the same time - for more information please visit Orchard Mapping May Day.
