The beauty of National Conveyancing week is that you can watch, or take part in, whichever session you want whenever you want.

The purpose of NCW will be (amongst other things) to Inform; Educate; Assist; Motivate; Reassure; Help recruit new entrants; Improve the profile of conveyancers and conveyancing and ensure fees can be set at and kept at an acceptable level. 

Conveyancers are, on the whole, undervalued, underappreciated and misunderstood, and there are more leaving the conveyancing profession at the top end than there are joining at the bottom end, and is it any wonder?

The profile of conveyancing and conveyancers needs to improve. They are not the bad guys, in fact, they are quite the opposite, they help people buy their dream homes so that they can live in them and enjoy them as they should. And in these times of fraud and scams, they also make sure that the biggest purchase of their lives is carried out diligently.

In the 20th Century, conveyancers had maybe 10 plates to keep spinning at any one time, now, in the 21st century, it is many many more. And they still keep being added too. The job now is far more challenging than it was, and despite advances in technology, in some quarters there is still a reluctance to adopt and adapt and create efficiencies to enable productivity and streamline workflow. Something needs to change.

Welcome to National Conveyancing Week

The Conveyancing Foundation is a zero-profit registered charity whose purpose is to enhance the lives of those in the conveyancing industry and to support charity fundraising initiatives. Recruiting and retaining good staff is a national issue for the conveyancing industry, especially as the role of property lawyers is often viewed as stressful and undervalued. Recruiting is also time-consuming and can be expensive, and the effect of a high turnover of staff can cause service issues for clients and unsettle other members of the firm. In this session, we look at recruitment and retention strategies that actually work and delve further with our panel experts into key issues like the below questions. What got you into conveyancing? What keeps you in conveyancing? How can we attract newcomers?

Love them or loathe them, you can’t ignore them, and as market conditions tighten are panel managers a sensible route to obtaining new work? A panel of front-line conveyancers will discuss the pros and cons of panel managers and why some law firms work with them, and why some don’t. Avoiding or resolving Client Conflict - Clients have the right to complain if they feel the service they receive is not best practice, but how you respond can make a huge difference to your continued relationship with the client and reputation as a whole. In this session, we will get insights from the Ombudsman on the most common types of complaints about conveyancers and how they should be avoided and resolved. Managing panel managers to make the most of the relationship

There is increasing concern about the expectations on conveyancers when it comes to property due diligence, amplified recently with the discussions on climate change. With contributions from across the representative industry bodies, including the Conveyancing Association, Council of Property Search Organisations, Conveyancing Information Executive, Society of Licensed Conveyancers and Bold Legal Group, this discussion will address the direction of travel around property due diligence; including views on technology, accessing live data rather than snippets in time and the availability of refreshing the information, product roadmaps for the data providers, and specific issues including climate change. This extended edition of the Today’s Conveyancer podcast has been recorded as part of National Conveyancing Week, an initiative designed to raise the profile of the conveyancing profession across the home moving industry.

What does the future of property due diligence and searches look like?

Tuesday 21st March

The intention of the presentation is to identify which prescribed documents would have to be reviewed to identify the Material Information which must be provided on advertising a property. We want stakeholders (conveyancers, estate agents, mortgage brokers) in regional networks to work together to help produce the Up Front Information to identify the material Information to be advertised on the property adverts and know where they can get hold of it to provide the right advice for a potential buyer. The British Conveyancing Awards 2023

Wednesday 22nd March

Firms will open up their offices for an hour or two and offer coffee and cakes to local estate agents, IFAs, property-related businesses, introducers, referrals networks business people, and their clients. They can explain what methods and processes they have in place to ensure client satisfaction and confidentiality whilst complying with a significant amount of regulation. Collaboration, understanding, empathy and friendship- these are all the core themes of National Conveyancing Week. As the inaugural National Conveyancing Week comes to a close Rob Hailstone (Founder and CEO of Bold Legal Group) and David Opie (Managing Director of Today’s Media and publishers of Today’s Conveyancer) share why they felt it was important to launch an initiative to raise the profile of conveyancers in the home moving industry. They will share some of their own personal stories of events throughout the week and consider the lessons we can take forward into the rest of 2023 and beyond.
