Opening remarks

The NDL has become a “floating signifier”, with the term being used to refer to various different aspects of data infrastructure, data standards, data governance, or even specific data science projects. This panel will ground the day’s discussion by providing perspectives on what should be in and out of scope for the NDL, what features of an NDL would provide additional value for existing data initiatives, and which of these features should be prioritised.

Opening panel: What should the NDL be?

Including… The Data Wishlist (data-wish list.fyi), the Bennett Institute for Applied Data Science’s OpenSAFELY platform, the Open Data Institute’s work on AI readiness and the Croissant metadata vocabulary for ML datasets, and OpenMined’s SyftBox network for privacy-preserving data science.

Talks and demos

This panel will offer reflections on the technical approaches demoed, considering how they can support an effective NDL, as well as Government’s broader AI ambitions. Panellists will share perspectives on what policy levers could accelerate delivery of the NDL, how tech providers can best work with Government to pilot key features of the NDL, and what steps should be taken to mitigate any outstanding barriers.
