Natural Dyes Workshop
make colourful natural dyes from a variety of sources, using tried and tested recipes
Naturally dye yarn, fleece and fabric in heated dye baths. We will use some seasonal dye stuff including leaves, bark, including leaves, flowers, roots, tree bark and kitchen waste. We will also use mineral salts as mordants, such as alum and iron, which will help to fix the dye and increase the variety of shades and colours. The dyed yarn and fabric from our dye pots will then be used to produce a colourful sample swatch, for you to keep as a record and use for future reference.
Also during the workshop you can choose a tote bag, scarf, fleece or piece of fabric which has been naturally dyed during the session to take home.
This workshop aims to teach you the basics of natural dyeing for you to gain enough knowledge and confidence to continue using natural dyes independently.
All materials and equipment are provided. Wear clothes that you don't mind getting messy, or bring an apron. You may also like to bring a small garment, like a t-shirt, a similar size piece of fabric, or some yarn to put in one of the dye pots if there is room in the pots towards the end of the session.
This workshop is suitable for beginners and the number of participants is limited to 8.
An accompanied child free, for 7-18yrs, see ticket options to apply.
Refreshments will be provided, please bring your own lunch.
