This event will feature industry experts Anthony Thistleton of Waugh Thistleton, Alex de Rijke of dRMM, Jerry Tate of Tate &amp; Co, Rory Bergin of HTA Designs, Jess Hrivnak, technical adviser from RIBA and sustainability consultant Chris Gaze sharing their insights and best practices on utilising timber as a sustainable building material. 'A Journey in Timber'. Jerry founded Tate+Co in 2007. He is driven by his desire to generate creative, pragmatic and unique solutions for each project that have a positive impact on our built and natural environment.  Jerry is an active member of the construction industry community and is a fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts. He is frequently invited to lecture, notably at Education Estates, the Carpenters Fellowship and Ecobuild, as well as contribute to architecture publications, including the Architects Journal, Building Design, Sustain, and World Architecture News. He has taught at Harvard University, run a timber design and make course for the Dartmoor Arts organisation and was Regnier Visiting Professor for Kansas State University’s Architecture School in 2021/22.

Chris has held a variety of roles in the world of timber and sustainability.  He was Technical Director at TopHat, but has also worked in panelised timber frame. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Environmentalist

'Warped and Cantilevered Engineered Timber.' Professor Alex de Rijke is a founding Director of dRMM, having established the practice in 1995 with Philip Marsh and Sadie Morgan. He is a design champion, responsible for the concept, construction and delivery of dRMM’s timber projects including Sliding House, Kingsdale School, WorkStack, Tower of Love, Endless Stair, WoodBlock House, Maggie’s Oldham, and the Stirling Prize-winning Hastings Pier.
 
De Rijke was appointed as the first ever Professor of Timber Architecture at TU Delft in 2023 and has extensive teaching experience at various institutions including London South Bank University, the Düsseldorf School of Architecture, and the Architectural Association. He was Dean of Architecture at the Royal College of Art from 2011-2015, instigating a new culture of making and prototyping.

'New Model Building'. Since establishing Waugh Thistleton Architects in 1997, Anthony and Andrew Waugh have dedicated
themselves to sustainability in architectural practice and materially reducing the impact of both energy use
and embodied energy in construction, culminating in the completion of Murray Grove, the worlds first tall
CLT structure in 1997. Since then, they have been at the forefront of the utilisation of mass timber in
construction, with around 25 completed projects across a range of scales and types.
 
Anthony lectures extensively on the use and future of engineered timber and modular solutions and,
through an international network of CLT and timber producers, he is linked to the entire engineered timber supply chain from foresters to producers and end users. He is a board member of TDUK and a member of
the Forest Economy Coalition.

“Materials and Design Guidance in a Climate Emergency - The RIBA Climate Challenge, the UK Net Zero Carbon Standard and use of timber”. Jess Hrivnak is the RIBA’s Technical Adviser for Sustainability. She leads the Institute’s work on the UK Net Zero Carbon Building Standard as a member of Standard’s Technical Steering Group. At RIBA she is responsible for the 2030 Climate Challenge guidance and the Chartered Practice Sustainable Development Toolkit. She works collaboratively within the Institute and with partner organisations to improve climate literacy, align design targets, strategies and processes- focussing on design guidance on improving planetary and human health outcomes. She also works independently, and tutors and lectures at Universities in the UK on environmental design and sustainability policy. During her career she has worked as a sustainability consultant across the construction industry: with BioRegional, 3Adapt and at Max Fordham LLP where she was a Partner
