This event will examine the recent tensions within the Conservative Party over the UK's net zero target.

The UK’s net zero climate target was implemented by a Conservative Prime Minister and Boris Johnson has committed his government to delivering against it. However, recent months have seen high profile criticism of the target by a small but vocal group of Conservative MPs in the Net Zero Scrutiny Group and some right-wing commentators. Several Conservative MPs have also reacted by reaffirming their commitment to net zero, including through the newly formed Net Zero Support Group. This event will discuss these developments, and what they mean for British party politics and climate policy action going forward.Chair:Katy Balls - The SpectatorSpeakers:Gideon Skinner - IpsosDr Robert Saunders - Queen Mary University of LondonFelicity Buchan MPJohn Flesher - Conservative Environment NetworkThe discussion will include consideration of the following questions:-What are the motivations of Conservative net zero sceptics, and are they likely to influence public opinion and/or government policy?-How widespread is net zero scepticism among the Conservative parliamentary party and membership?-How secure is the Conservative Party’s commitment to delivering net zero by 2050?-How will positioning on net zero/the environment affect the Conservative Party’s electoral strategy/fortunes?-How does the Conservative Party’s approach to the environment compare to other right-wing parties in western democracies?This event will be held in-person.
