Netwalk with me for the Young Tongues Living in Norfolk has given me the privilege of being part of an amazing and supportive business community. They stood by me in my early 20s as I entered the workforce, supported me through self-employment in my late 20s, and became crucial after my tongue cancer diagnosis in my early 30s. I'd love for you to join me on a pre-work walk around Whitlingham broad. It's free to attend, but a small donation would be appreciated. We'll meet at 7.30am on Friday, 26th January at the Whitlingham car park. We aim to finish by 8.45am so you can get to work on time.

Five years ago, I was diagnosed with Tongue Cancer. Since then, my life has undergone significant changes — navigating the diagnosis, recovering from treatment, managing the mental health impact, and adapting to a new version of myself. It was the hardest experience of my life. However, amidst these challenges, I discovered a profound sense of purpose.Tongue cancer is a disease associated with "alcoholic chain-smoking old men". I am, of course, none of those things, and after my diagnosis, I always believed I was some sort of medical anomaly. However, when I started sharing my story online, I soon learned that I'm far from alone in this experience – there are lots of young tongue cancer patients out there. The journey, once isolating, has connected me with others who understand and share similar challenges.Results published in <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32622292/" title="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/32622292/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Oral Oncology</a> showed a significant increase in the incidence of tongue cancer in people under 45, particularly in young women where the incidence has risen by a staggering 385% over 32 years.On top of that the <a href="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-67331885" title="https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-67331885" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">BBC</a> recently reported how there has been a 46% in oral cancer deaths in England from 2011 to 2021 blaming dentistry cuts. To put that into perspective the British Dental Association tweted: "Oral cancer claims more lives than car accidents. But NHS dentistry is still waiting on a promised recovery plan.”

We’re currently assisting over 500 patients worldwide, and we continue to build our community through virtual and in-person meet-ups. Our online platform serves as a lifeline for tongue cancer patients, fostering connection and combating isolation.We utilise community insights to create relevant social media content for patients and healthcare professionals. Recently, we introduced a caregiver support group and are launching an alumni group for those 10+ years post-treatment, addressing long-term health challenges resulting from treatment.Despite achieving so much with limited resources, we're just beginning our work and seek your support. On 16th March 2024, I'll embark on a 100-kilometre trek from London to Amman, Jordan, to celebrate five years of being cancer-free. This Arabian desert adventure aims to raise funds for the Young Tongues, supporting the professionalisation and expansion of our services, increasing awareness, developing age-appropriate resources, advocating for improved survival rates and quality of life, and funding research for the next generation of young tongue cancer patients.
