Moving to Dublin to set up a business, knowing not a soul, and having no background in businss having spent 7 years in Education, Melissa realised very quickly that in order to succeed in business, she would have to learn how to excel at networking.The key to networking is in making genuine connections, and over the past 5 years, Melissa has grown a wide and diverse national network, and it has been the key to growing a business and creating brand awareness.Along the way, she made many rookie networking errors; spreading herself thin and going to everything, lack of focus on desired outcomes from attending events, talking loads and learning little, not listening enough.She has also seen terrible networking tactics; walking the room handing out business cards to all and sundry, using the phone as a crutch and failing to engage, broadcasting at people instead of engaging in conversation, being salesy and pushy, failing to follow up with connections made.She has spoken widely on the topic of networking at numerous conferences and events nationwide.''People will forget what you said, they will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.''Maya Angelou

Networking is a core business activity, or at least it should be. Starting a business is one thing, and a brave thing. But making that business succeed requires brand awareness and advocacy. And it requires a wide network of contacts for advice, support, referrals, creativity and innovation. 
Smart entrepreneurs network. They understand that meaningful, mutually beneficial, and lasting business relationships are your ROI on networking.

And yet we make a terrible assumption about networking. We assume that everyone can do it, naturally. We are expected to be able to go out there, network, and get results from it. But there’s so much more to networking than turning up at events and handing out your business card to everyone you see. Or at least there is if you want to get a tangible return on it.
The key to success in business is in learning to connect with people.
Whether you are in a career and want to progress, a start-up business, or an entrepreneur, learning how to network like a pro, naturally, and enjoy it, is one of the most important things you can do for your personal and professional brand.
